Footnote
Note: Henry William Banks Davis specialised in paintings of landscapes with animals, mostly sheep, in Wales, Scotland and on the cliffs and hills of the areas around Boulogne, where he lived from 1861 to 1865. His paintings of the 1850s and early 1860s, such as the present lot, are heavily indebted to the Pre-Raphaelites, with their high level of observation, vivid colouring and detailed technique. Although the original title has been lost to us, it can be presumed that this painting is one of the number of views of the Pas de Calais that Davis exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution from 1860 to 1865.
