Note: Andrew Currie was a prominent sculptor who is perhaps best known for producing the stone monument of King Robert the Bruce at Stirling Castle. After working as a mill-wright in the Scottish Borders for many years, Currie began sculpting in his mid-forties exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1855 to 1877. This sculpture of the Virgin Mary was purchased in 1891 by George Paterson Sutherland, founder of one of Scotland's foremost sculpting and masonry firms, George Sutherland and Sons. Other notable works by Currie include the poet James Hogg at St. Mary's Loch and the figures of Edie Ochiltree and Old Mortality on the Scott Monument in Edinburgh.
