Note: 'Tumble' cups, whilst regularly found in silver and sometimes porcelain, are rare in glass; current research has not been able to identify any other similar pieces. Originally made to be used in carriages, 'tumble' cups have heavily weighted bottoms and are self-righting, rocking and rolling gently so as to not spill their contents. 'Tumble Ups', alternatively, are cups which fit over the top of a decanter, and are a commonly found commodity generally fashioned in glass. The motifs portrayed on the glass nod to Jacobite symbolism, with an open rose head and closed rose buds. Unusually, the rose on this example is depicted at a ¾ angle, which is atypical for traditional 18th century Jacobite imagery. It is a possibility this glass was a novelty item created for use in a Jacobite drinking society in the second quarter of the 19th century.
