Biography: Stuart Mackenzie was born in 1959 into a family of land workers and gamekeepers from the Scottish Highlands and Ireland. From an early age, he was fascinated by the Scottish landscape and the natural world- an interest that has shaped his work throughout his career. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1979-83 and then in Madrid, courtesy of The Richard Ford Award. In 1987, he became the first Artist-in-Residence in Aberdeen Art Gallery.
MacKenzie has had a prolific teaching career, having taught at Robert Gordon's University and Glasgow School of Art, where he currently teaches the Mlitt (Masters in Painting) and is Pathway Leader in Mlitt (Masters) drawing. Drawing and painting have been central to his practice and to his teaching for the past 25 years. He was elected member of the Academic Council at Glasgow School of Art, the Exhibitions Committee, and Council Member of the Royal Scottish Academy. He is also the Convenor of the Royal Scottish Academy's New Contemporaries exhibition and sits on the committee for the Richard Ford Award Madrid Scholarships (London). MacKenzie has exhibited his work across the UK and internationally, and his work is held in many public and private collections. He continues to create monumental abstract paintings of the Scottish landscape.
