Biography: David Donaldson studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1932-37, winning the Director’s Prize in 1936. He was awarded a travelling scholarship in 1937, allowing him to travel to Paris and Florence, before completing post-graduate studies back in Glasgow. He painted and exhibited regularly throughout his long career, as well as teaching at the Glasgow School of Art. He was commissioned to paint the Queen in 1966, and was appointed the Queen’s Painter and Limner for Scotland in 1977. He also completed many other high-profile portrait commissions, including of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
