Note:
As nomadic cattle herders, the Karamajong of northern Uganda use body ornamentation as their primary focus of visual art and are famous for their jewellry, beadwork and headgear. Their elaborate hairstyles have drawn comment as early as the 19th cenutry. Hats such as the present example are worn alongside ornate coiffures as a symbol of pride and beauty during ceremonies and other social events.
