The Khond people of eastern India were traditionally hunter gatherers and maintained a strong religious identity separate from the Hindu pantheon. Their religious practices largely revolved around animism, ancestor and nature worship. To this end, bronze casted representations of various animals such as the present examples were created by a distinct caste of metalsmiths and kept in special enclosures.
